As I reflect on Saturday, I refer to Essential II for Doctoral Education for Advance Nursing Practice. Essential II discusses the importance of Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking. In Essential II, sensitivity to diverse cultures is important in delivery culturally competent care for various populations. Ms. Chi Chi Okezie from SIMPLEnetworking described four ways to achieve culturally unbiased care: 1. Correct culturally biased behavior when delivery care to unfamiliar populations, 2. Correlate by giving constant and consistent care, 3. Correspond or be respectful to culturally diverse populations, and 4. Corroborate with all people to achieve a common goal for populations in health. An important statement by Ms. Okezie is to always strive for inclusive behavior, and not just tolerate different cultures. We are better in a diverse society rather than a homogeneous group.
In reference to Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods, I found the presentation by Dr. Davis most interesting to my scholarly work. Because of his work with elderly people with advance dementia, Dr. Davis is piloting a program to care for patients with any type of dementia in the emergency room, which may prevent admissions, or unnecessary care for this progressive illness. I was able to ask after him, after his presentation, about his thoughts on placing a palliative care healthcare provider in the specialized emergency room. I defended my question due to the many patients and their families I meet everyday, with advanced dementia. They have very little insight into the trajectory of the illness. I voiced my concern that many patients and their families are not prepared for the terminal trajectory of the illness. I also stated my opinion about early advance care planning for this population, which starts at the time of diagnosis.
Developing an idea for a DNP project has become a challenge. Essential I: Scientific Underpinnings for Practice states the importance of developing new practice ideas and practices. I a lot of ideas for many DNP projects that can be beneficial for many people in different populations. I learned on Saturday I must narrow my focus, and a create project based on one population and one intervention. I still consider informatics and important part of my DNP project, and will incorporate informatics into palliative care, my specialty.
